<image:caption>Keen amateur photographer Alastair Macdonald makes no pretence of being a great photographer; he just wants to encourage people to get out and take photographs. He enjoys his hobby despite having had M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) also known as CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) for nearly 25 years and now has a form of Long Covid on top. He accepts he cannot access some of the fantastic places other photographers can reach, but he endeavours to capture great shots anyway</image:caption>

<image:caption>A lone tree on the Isle of Kerrera. This is a simple image taken from the Isle of Kerrera Vlog (15-06-21). I could have shown the castle, but I leave that for you to find in the video. Accessibility - From the ferry to the castle, you will go from a tarmac to gravel road, as shown here, to a grass path that can get rough and muddy if wet. The walk is fair with minimal climbs and just a couple of mild gradients throughout. Check before setting off to see if the Tea Rooms are open. This was a serious shift from my normal vlogs. This time, I actually walked a fair distance which is highly unusual and does not really fit with the “Accessible Photography” ethos. I needed to stretch myself though. I must build up my fitness and not let the M.E. hold me back. I have done so for too long, and you can hear my breathlessness in the videos after very little exertion. Maybe, just maybe, I will do a few more of these “long walks” until they begin to feel like moderate or even short walks. :-)</image:caption>

I have though not released it on general access as the quality is not as good as it could be. It was filmed on a day when I had problems with the GoPro and did not realise it was not filming in hyper smooth despite being set to do so. The result is shaky filming. I think though, I will return here and do a proper video as this was just a spontaneous event on discovering this little gem.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tobermory, Isle of Mull Tobermory was built as a fishing port in the late 18th century and is now the main town on Mull. It is a picture postcard of a place with brightly painted buildings along the main street to the pier and the high woodland-fringed hills surrounding the bay. The town has a good variety of shops, hotels, and other accommodation as well as being the administrative centre for the island. The harbour is always busy with fishing boats, yachts and the ferry to and from Kilchoan. (From - https://www.tobermory.co.uk ) I only made a very brief visit to Tobermory as I was only on the Island for the day. I will return and explore the town and the island in a more relaxed way sometime in the, hopefully near future. I could not do this place justice in such a short time. The image here of the town is not the main one taken, I will show that below. I do like this one, though. The sun shone through a gap in the clouds, and the result was a nice scene with dramatic clouds. The image here and the one below are taken from the main car park. For a change, parking has been placed where a view can be taken rather in the way of a good view or well away from any view at all. It is very convenient for all levels of photography.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Castle Stalker I visited Castle Stalker for only the second time and this time I got to the best view point location. I spent a long time waiting for the sun to reappear having gone in moments after I arrive. Wikipedia :- Castle Stalker (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal an Stalcaire) is a four-storey tower house or keep. It is set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is about 1&1⁄2 miles north-east of Port Appin, Argyll, Scotland, and is visible from the A828 road about midway between Oban and Glen Coe. The name "Stalker" comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning "hunter" or "falconer". The island castle is one of the best preserved medieval tower houses to survive in western Scotland and is a Category A listed building. It stands in the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area, one of forty such areas in Scotland. Accessibility is not great due to restrictions in parking nearby. I suggest not visiting during peak tourist times of the year and then the Car Park at the Old Inn may be open. From there, it is a gentle walk down to this location. Check Tide times, though, as with the tide in these rails disappear.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Glen Nevis From a distinctive mound or knoll at the side of the C1162 Glen Nevis Road, we get a spectacular view of the Glen. Although not mentioned in the video, we are looking up at the mountains Sgurr á Mhàim, Stob Choire á Mhail and Stob Bàn. The biggest of all, Ben Nevis, is to the side, so close its summit cannot be seen. I just had to get a sunny view of this location and ventured out early enough to avoid incoming clouds but late enough for the light to flood down the steep mountain slopes. I then returned two days later. Again, early, but this time before the cloud hanging off the steep hillsides would burn off. The rain had just stopped, and the air was warming, which caused the forests to steam and add to the hanging cloud. Unfortunately, these moist, windless conditions are perfect for the Midges and clouds of those who descended upon me. Not for many years have I experienced Midges as bad as this, and I have never filmed a swarm so clearly. The location was used in Braveheart for the village scenes, but we also see other areas used in other scenes from this location. Other films have also been filmed in this Glen, such as Harry Potter, Outlander, & Highlander. Accessibility. The view is obtainable from the car, using the car park at the location marked on Google maps as The Braveheart Film Village. If you are up to it, you can climb the Mound for a better view. There is a path and steps, but the steps are huge, so be aware.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Jacobite Steam Train A shot at an iconic steam engine, The Jacobite or Hogwarts Express. Officially, this is The Jacobite Train, but for obvious reasons, the owners have also dubbed it the Hogwarts Express and sell tickets to that market. There is even a Harry Potter shop on board. This is a clever way of increasing your target market from steam enthusiasts and people wanting to see the stunning Scottish Landscape to also include Harry Potter fans young and old. The reason for this being obvious is that this is the sister train (BR 45407 or LMS 5407) to that was used in the Harry Potter film and travels across the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct where Harry flew a car past the train. The actual train 5972 has been loaned to Warner Bros Films for their Harry Potter film Studio Tours. I have walked a short distance from the car to this location. I love the combination of the old white house on one side and the signal box or bridge control tower and Ben Nevis on the other side of a fabulous old steam train. By the way the train was built in 1937. The train made its way across the swing bridge very slowly, which makes it ideal for photography by novices. A calm day will mean great reflections in the canal below, but please keep in mind that the train does not reflect well from this position.</image:caption>

<image:caption>View from my seat on the plane as we approach Tromsø. Taken with my compact camera, the Panasonic Lumix TZ60 is referred to as the Lumix from now on. This was my second of two legs to get here—First Edinburgh to Oslo, then Oslo to Tromsø. In Edinburgh, for the first time, I paid a little extra to use the Executive lounge. An excellent way to start a holiday. Quiet, spacious, free coffee and nibbles. I should do that more often. The flight route, as I said, was to Oslo first. T here, I found what appeared to be quite a small airport. I wandered around a little as I had lots, so time to kill. Then something drew my eye. People are going through a door. I then discovered I needed to go that way to get to my connection. Through I went and down some stairs into a much larger terminal area. Of course, I'd been killing time in a small international arrivals area and now needed to be in Domestic Departures. I could have bought a Reindeer hide, expensive clothes and an array of expensive tourist tat—my first experience of prices in Norway. Then it was time to board my SAS flight up to Tromsø. I always book a window seat for the views; it is usually over the wing, which is not great for pictures, but being an emergency exit, the seat usually has lots of leg room.</image:caption>

I wanted to use the bridge as a lead in line to the Church, the Ishavskatedralen or Arctic Cathedral. From there, the diamond shape of the cathedral points to the dominating mountain behind. I like the image and so do many others. I put this up on Google maps, and to date of writing, it has had 472,656 views. (6 While typing this paragraph!). I will be honest. In the other direction, the next land mass is Greenland. As you probably know, I do much of my photography from a Tripod. I was using my travel tripod, which was a few years old and heavily used. It should not have been surprising that the mounting plate would work loose, which it did. A wobbly tripod is as good as no tripod. I was stuck, I needed an Allen Key, and it was not with me. Thankfully, Ian is not shy and strode off to a nearby house and asked to borrow one. 69°38'32.5"N 17°59'53.1"E 69.642371, 17.998073</image:caption>

<image:caption>We saw this lovely boat silently pass us by. I looked it up later. It is Opal, an Electric Hybrid Schooner used for Whale watching trips. - "Built at the Bodenwerft in Damgarten, Germany, in 1951, she served as a trawler in the Baltic, North, and Barents Sea. In 1973 new owners started her restoration. For eight years until 1981, Opal was converted to the elegant but seaworthy, two-masted schooner she is today. She has sailed worldwide, completing several trans-Atlantic crossings and has been carefully maintained through the years. Opal remained with the same owners until becoming part of North Sailing´s fleet in early 2013. She has undergone restoration and had interior work done to better fit her for the new purpose as an expedition ship. The Opal has six double/twin cabins plus crew facilities. She has three bathrooms and two showers. She comfortably fits 12 passengers, plus her crew." Nikon D750 - Location 69°38'05.3"N 17°58'59.9"E 69.634816, 17.983318</image:caption>

I liked the red boat reflecting in the mirror-like Bay. So I walked further down from where we parked and took this. Compositionally it could be better. It would be nice if the boat pointed into the image and not to the edge. I can't move the boat, though, and the walkway down was ugly. Nikon D750. With the town on a hill, there was a chance that I could get an in-line photograph of the Bridge with the Arctic Cathedral on the far side. I parked when I saw a gap between houses and walked back up the street. To get this shot, I had to stand on someone's driveway. Apologies to them. I got the shot I wanted, though it was 6 seconds on a tripod on a stranger's driveway. The things I do! Camera Nikon D750. <image:caption>Third Full day. Sunday. The highlight of the week for me was a Dog Sled ride in the snow covered Norwegian Landscape. The trick here was to shut down the lens to get as much depth of field as possible, without the shutter being too slow for the bumpy ride. f13 24mm and 1/800s worked well thanks to the bright sunny day. All I had to do was compose a shot while moving at a fair speed. The coordinates only show the start and finish points. Without a GPS tracker on the camera, I cannot say where each image was taken in this set. For those interested in doing this and happen to be visiting the area, then either use the coordinates to locate the business or simply click the image above. 69°37'22.6"N 18°45'55.1"E 69.622953, 18.765293</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am proud of this. I saw the tree or trees ahead and placed them in the frame. I then panned from the moving sled keeping the trees in the frame. Once to my side in clear snow and an incredible backdrop, I clicked the shutter. Some might not like the composition as the tree breaks over the top of the distant mountains. I though like that. For the mountains are far away. Also, the gap is right between the two peaks. The jut of land on the right comes far enough to be of interest but does not go behind the tree, which is perfect. It also helps balance the image because the trees are not centred; they are just off to the left. For a grabbed shot, I am more than happy with the composition. 69°37'22.6"N 18°45'55.1"E 69.622953, 18.765293</image:caption>

<image:caption>12.10 am Local Time. Another 3-second exposure, on a tripod, of course. I had said good night to my friends a while earlier. Then I went to my hotel and returned to this area to take boat pictures at night. If that's not odd enough, I also risked getting jumped on by Security or Police. See that Herras Fence sticking out over the edge of the harbour wall. Well, it was sticking out further when I arrived. I wouldn't say I liked it infringing on the boat, especially the name, so I tried to move it right out the way. Unfortunately, it was tied and would only move a small amount. I took my picture and then returned the fence to the position I found it in. The mooring post in the foreground could have been avoided, but no. Why? Because it is painted in the same colour as the ship's hull. Having two similar colours in the frame is always good. A third to the left, maybe a tiny red boat, would have been perfect; a triangle of colour. Camera Nikon D750. location:-69°38'49.8"N 18°57'42.1"E 69.647156, 18.961683</image:caption>

I have had to reduce it and add black sides so it does not get the top and bottom cropped. This is 6 images stitched in Lightroom to give massive detail of the town and the snow blowing through. Again taken from the view point. Not surprisingly there was only two people out there. Ian and I. Everyone else made do with the view point from the cable car or better still the restaurant windows. <image:caption>After our trip up the mountain on the cable car, we went for a drive and I managed to get the car stuck in the snow. That was with proper snow tyres on as well. Ian took over. Here he is kicking snow out from the wheels. Then he jumped in and used the Jeremy Clarkson driving method to get out. POWER! I had been too gentle, using a high gear and trying to ease my way out. It seems with titanium studs the best way is press the POWER pedal and just cut through the snow until it gets grip. It worked and we got moving again, with Ian driving this time. Phone image. <image:caption>Last Morning. Wednesday 3rd May. This scene and the next are taken from outside the airport. I stopped on the way in. I had plenty time. Took the camera and the 70-200mm lens out and started taking pictures. I managed to capture the rain or snow falling between me and the hills beyond. The very hills just days before I was dog sledding through in glorious weather. I was taking pictures from the airport fuel station. There I heard someone calling. I looked round and a man approached, a smile on his face and a camera clutched in his hands. He was a photographer from Oslo and was doing the same as me, catching the weather against the hills. We realised the view could be improved by crossing the main road which we did and got closer to the shore. That really improved the final image, which is the one you see here. Packed the camera away and headed off to the Rental Car drop off and then on to airline check in. 69°40'39.2"N 18°54'09.3"E 69.677557, 18.902585</image:caption>

<image:caption>Glen Etive from Glen Coe. Have you seen the famous image taken a thousand times of the Buachaille Etive Mor with a small waterfall and Silver Birch tree? You will know it, I may even add one on here. Well, this was taken from that spot. Instead of pointing West I turned South and saw this wonderful light on the hills of Glen Etive and took a picture. I am glad I did, I really like it. The sun was bright on the rock face, so I took an exposure from the brightest point and took that image so as not to burn out the highlights. Access is moderately easy. If wet it will be very muddy and good boots or rubber boots are recommended. This is because the area is heavily walked over by photographers as this is now a "Honey pot" location. Camera Nikon D7000 Location:- 56°38'52.0"N 4°52'00.8"W 56.647783, -4.866893</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bow Fiddle Rock. The Original image is in Portrait orientation, but this page is set only to take Landscape. I have therefore cropped it for this page. This was taken on Christmas Eve, the sun, even in the middle of the day is very low in the sky. Behind and to the side are cliffs and the only part of the rock able to catch the sun light is the tip of the near peak and half of the further away peak. This is quite literally "touched by light". My Vlog from here shows the rock beach and the steep path in and out of the small bay that looks out on to this wonderful scene. I mention it is not the most accessible place to get to, but point out there is an over look from the top of the cliff for those less mobile. <image:caption>The Church. A late afternoon dog walk up to the "Catholic Church of The Holy Name" (As per the sign above the door.) I really wanted a pure white field, but forgot about the long tufts of what I think is Bog Grass. I wish I'd stopped working a little earlier as then I might have managed to get the entire Church in the sunlight. Accessibility. For me not bad at all. An easy walk from home and trudging across a snowy field is not too difficult. I certainly wouldn't want to try a long journey through conditions like that though. For anyone visiting, there is a car park at the church. To access the field, rather than climb a fence, walk to the right on exiting the car park (North) and follow the path to the point where the fence is down and has been for a number of years. Walk up and over the crest and the view will be there for you. Camera; Fujifilm XT-4. Nikon D750 for last two images. That day had been ear marked as my Recce day, but as the sun came out I started to vlog. The colour and the reflections in the loch are just wonderful. This image is taken from on top of a Dam. There is a small car park and the access down to the dam is easy. 57°18'21.6"N 4°52'04.1"W 57.306008, -4.867814</image:caption>

<image:caption>I had three hours of light to photograph Autumn in Perthshire. I was stopping over for the night on my way to Glen Affric. I managed just a few images in the Killicrankie to Queensview area. I hope in my Vlog I show clearly how accessible everything was. Three out of four locations are from the road side and the fourth, the one shown here, is Queens View, which is highly accessible. For detail of Queens View accessibility please see the video I did a couple of months before this one. The autumn colour, even though subdued by the weather was jaw dropping. Seriously, next year, if you can, then make your way to Perthshire for wonderful colour and scenery. All the way up the A90/A9 from Dunfermline to Inverness was just spectacular. This is Queen's View location. Once there, follow the well marked path to the view point. 56°43'00.4"N 3°51'27.4"W 56.716770, -3.857602</image:caption>

<image:caption>Castle Grant, Home Farm Entrance. Taken on an evening photo trip on Speyside. I could return to this area again and again and have new content each time. There is so much to see. Here though I have taken a run in the car out of Granton-on-spey heading North and take in a couple of places of interest. If you are in the area I do suggest you go for a drive, park safely and take the pics you want. Just remember to watch for traffic when at the side of the road. You will notice in the Vlog that Duke does not appear until I am away from the roads and climbing a hill. For this image I parked on the far side of that arch where there is space to do so. Listen and watch for traffic when walking through the arch though as there is little room there. Note the lack of pavement at the side of the road. 57°21'06.2"N 3°36'32.9"W 57.351707, -3.609132</image:caption>

<image:caption>Linn Falls, Moray. This started out as a vlog about river photography in Perthshire and Speyside, but that did not pan out. I ended up concentrating on this one place. Accessibility for Linn Falls is good. There is a wide flat surfaced path all the way in with only one moderately steep incline. Parking can be done either in the Aberlour distillery (Maybe just pay that a visit first) or by the cemetery. Maybe not right in front. There is a carpark behind it. Photographs can be taken from the edge of the stream, despite what I do, so I give this a Level 1 Accessibility rating due to ease of access and good path. If you use Google maps to check out the location you will not see the path. Look North of that location and you will see the Aberlour Distillery. The path is on the East side of the stream that runs beside the Distillery buildings. Unlike some Google reviews suggest, you do not access from the Distillery! 57°27'40.6"N 3°13'34.0"W 57.461285, -3.226106</image:caption>

<image:caption>Seacliff Beach near North Berwick. Had this not been a planned day out I would have stayed at home. I was tired and feeling a bit down in the dumps. The video probably reflects that as it is not easy to Vlog when you really don't feel great. However, later on I felt so much better than I would have done had I stayed in the house. Getting out and getting good fresh air (maybe polluted by sand at times) is highly beneficial to mood and energy. Access to Seacliff beach is by car and you have to pay to get in. There is a small parking area, which we used, but found later a much larger carpark further on with better beach access. I suggest you use that. I will do my best to pin point the location of this image. Note the little harbour is further to the right and a little forward of this location and is very much worth a visit. Feel the image is a bit grainy. Yes, that's because the light level was very low and the ISO had to be raised. 2000 ISO to get a 1/250 sec exposure at f13 56°03'15.8"N 2°38'20.7"W 56.054382, -2.639079</image:caption>

<image:caption>This time I am photographing Snowdrops. Where this is taken is accessible to most people, so feel free to visit Valleyfield Woodland Park in West Fife. Access is via the village of Shiresmill and you use the Riding for the Disabled therapy centre carpark. The path in is from the carpark. A shout out to the West Fife Woodlands Trust for looking after the woods and paths. Of course there is no need to go to my location as Snowdrops are all over the countryside at this time of year (February). If you manage to find a place with lots of them then that is great, but generally patches can be found on woodland walks and parks. The video for this image was my first in 4K. It did not go with out its problems which resulted in images being cropped without me realising and text getting cropped as well. <image:caption>Balvaird Castle in Perthshire. Where I parked was only 200m from the Fife county line. The walk to the castle was up a gentle incline on a good path. It was late afternoon/early evening when I arrived. The sun was almost down and I had to work fast to get shots in the light. However this is one of the dusk images that I really like. It is critical to get the branches and twigs in focus or the image is ruined and I feel I got that right. This image does not show the castle, just some old walls. The castle is of the Tower House variety and actually has glazed windows, so looks habitable. Please click the image to view the video to see the full castle. I do suggest visiting if in the area. 56°17'19.9"N 3°20'33.2"W 56.288867, -3.342554</image:caption>

<image:caption>Adam "Wadger Catcher" Russell and myself took a trip out to the East Neuk of Fife on a wee reconnaissance / scouting trip. Crail - Accessibility is very good. Park as close to the harbour as possible and its a short walk down. Those able to walk further, there are places to park in the village. It is worth walking through the village as you may get some nice architecture shots or even some seascape shots. The plan here was to create a "recce to final image video", but it just never happened. Therefore the video, which came out many months after filming, is a gentle reminder to finish off your projects, however little or large they may be. Please excuse my indulgence as I added a short memorial to my recently departed brother at the end. Location - 56°15'25.9"N 2°37'39.5"W 56.257193, -2.627630</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bringing in the harvest on the Machair. Machair refers to a fertile low-lying grassy plain found on part of the northwest coastlines of Ireland and Scotland, in particular the Outer Hebrides. The best examples are to be found on North and South Uist, Harris and Lewis. (Wikipedia) I took a drive round the Berneray coast in search of a monument and found this scene. This an others of the crofters bringing in the hay or silage, I am not exactly sure. I liked the tractor in heavy shadow and the sun bursting through between the clouds. I could have made this image a silhouette of the tractor and less burned out sky, but I really liked the detail I was able to get and keep the drama of the sky. I am parked at the side of the single track road on an area of cut Machair . I have walked no more than 10 meters to take the shot. Very Accessible. <image:caption>A new view. With trees felled, the view from the road of the loch like River Spean is now available. Check the location on Google maps, street View. As of January 2021 it still shows this view as a forest. What drew my attention was the crepuscular rays - Some people call it the "Fingers of God" or "Buddah's Rays" and even "Jacob's Ladder". Whatever you call it, they make wonderful additions to any landscape scene. I was parked a few meters away and walked back to this vantage point. The reason I walked back rather than just take the picture from the car is simple. By bringing in the curved wall, I created a leading line straight into the middle of the picture and the rays shining down. The eye is then brought back down to the right where the single trees remain. With two in line with me, the eye is brought to a fence and then back to the beginning and your exploration of the images starts again. The weather was getting worse, a storm was coming in and the further west I went the wetter and windier it got. These can be excellent conditions to get dramatic images though. This was a Scottish meet up and around 8 of us managed along. Many thanks to Adam Wadger Catcher Russell for organising the day. Like other videos I do make comment as to the accessibility of the locations. This image along with the title image for this section was taken just off Shore Road, Ayr. Local knowledge from Adam being used here. It was actually a side distraction to the main reason for visiting that area and that was to see and photograph a boat wreck. The image is of the remains a groin. There are several here and maybe at one time they did help keep a beach in place, but alas, no longer. <image:caption>Cherry Blossom - Dollar I managed to time my visit to Dollar to photograph the cherry blossom perfectly. The blossom was fantastic! The only negative was that I could only make it there on the weekend, so it was pretty busy with people. However, I managed this shot with no one in the scene. The next issue was the sun coming out after I packed my camera kit away. For the video, I also had problems with the radio mic failing to record despite having battery power left. I know now not to go under quarter power! I was also using the Nikon D850 for the first time in a very long time. I took it out in the summer last year for a portrait shoot, but I think that is the only actual use since I fell ill at the end of September 2022. That also caused a few problems as I had to remember how to use it properly again. At least 90% of my work is done in manual, so all I had to do was find which control wheel did aperture and which did speed and which way to turn the wheel! <image:caption>Woodland Damage I took a short walk in a local woodland, looking for compositions and exciting scenes. This fallen Tree covered in moss drew my attention because it has character, texture, and differing light. I love moss wood, especially when it is almost iridescent and glowing in the sun. This was taken with my lightweight Nikon Zfc and kit lens. I am pleased with this camera as it captures details quite well. I make mistakes with it, and it shows quickly, so I do have to take my time and ensure the right settings are in place to get what I want. Just off the A9 and a short walk from the car park on well worn paths. A bit of a step down to here, but well worth it. I had taken images with my 7Artisans 12mm f2.8 lens, but something was not right. I could not get a clean image. I suspect the vibrations of the torrent beside me. I switched to the kit lens and shot this at 16mm on the vertical four times. <image:caption>River Coupall Waterfall This is one of the most popular shots in the area of Glencoe. A lovely waterfall, a birch tree and the Buachaille Etive Mòr in the background. What’s not to like? This was the secondary location as the main view had very little water at the small waterfall. I am sure as the autumn and winter move on the falls will fill. This involves a short walk across the moorland. That can be very water-logged and boots or wellington boots are highly advised. Drive off the main Glencoe road down to Glen Etive. At the first lot of trees you come to there is a small area to park. Do so with care, remember others will want to use the same area and note, there is a severe drop into the river on the right-hand side. Wal back across the road and walk through one of the two small gaps in the bushes. That will take you on to the open moor. Walk straight ahead following the obvious route others have taken and you cannot miss the two points to get a classic view. By all means explore further up stream to find other compositions. <image:caption>Skyfall Waterfall I am sure it has a proper name, this lovely little waterfall on the river Etive, now marked on Google Maps as Skyfall Waterfall despite it not actually appearing in the film. Well, not directly, as the famous image of Bond and “M” standing beside the Aston Martin looking down the Glen does show the location. If you know the area, you know that they are looking towards the falls, but they are just not quite visible to them from their vantage point. At this time, this location is my number two accessible spot for Photography. My Number Three spot is shown in my “Touched by Light” Gallery. (Editing page to indicate that) Unfortunately I lost all usable video footage due to corrupted files in my GoPro, so there is currently (Sept 23) no video from there. Above you will find my Number one location. Why is is this number two? Mostly because it is not such an iconic image as number one, but also it is tricky to get to if you are not very mobile. Number 1 location isn’t super easy either, but after a step up from the road it is fairly flat ground all the way to the viewpoint. With this location there is an area you can park, just opposite the near by bridge. I would suggest walking up the road (EAST) to the passing place. There you will see a feint track leading to the water. It should bring you right to the access way down to the rock i used to take this image. Take care it is uneven. Either drop down and up to the rock as Duke did, or rock hop up over and don to the main rock area. <image:caption>Sgòrr Dhearg above Loch Leven This was an easy shoot for me—just a few meters from my caravan. I didn’t even leave the campsite. After walking Duke and allowing him a morning swim, I came back with the camera kit to capture the lovely morning light on the mountain across a very calm Sea loch. As you see, I hardly moved position and took several images. I could have swung around and taken more, but my videos are long enough already. For those interested, the campsite is called Invercoe, and it can be found just across the bridge from Glencoe Village on the road to Kinlochleven. I liked it so much that I am considering using it for long weekends to do more photography in Glencoe. It just depends on my fitness and if my recurring ME complicated by Long Covid will let me do the trips I want. <image:caption>Lavender Fields of Scotland. I was surprised to hear we had Lavender fields in Scotland and more so to hear I could drive there in half an hour. Rather than describe the place myself, I will Cut ‘n Paste from the Scottish Lavender Oils website:- Scotland's lavender farm is truly a must-visit summer destination. We produce essential oils for our perfume brand, Pellegrini Irwin. Located amidst the lush Kinross-shire countryside of Central Scotland, our lavender farm embraces its surrounding beauty, providing an opportunity for lavender enthusiasts to get up close and personal with their favourite scent and flower. With its stunning scenic views, it is no surprise that Scotland's lavender farm has become one of Scotland's most Instagrammed and visited summer venues. Visitors can explore the rows of lavender plants while soaking in the captivating views throughout the sprawling rows of lavender. Whether you're looking for some peace and quiet alone among nature or for a photoshoot amongst picturesque backgrounds, our farm is sure to be the perfect place for a spectacular summer experience! I enjoyed my afternoon despite the noise from excited tourists. I arrived around 2 pm and stayed until the back of Four. By that time, on a Monday, I almost had the place to myself. I advise avoiding the weekend if you want to enjoy the place without lots of people around. The area is easy to walk on and wheelchairs can move around, either with help or with motors. The inclines appeared to be no problem to a motorised wheelchair when I was there. fyi wheelchair users get free access. I experimented with three lenses. The kit lens that came with the Nikon Zfc, a 7Artisans 12mm for wide shots and the Artlab imitation Nikkor 50mm lens from the 80s. It may be an imitation, but it is good. A solid metal and glass lens that produces crisp colourful images. Just a touch of blur in the corners, but I quite like that. It’s how I remember lenses from that period. <image:caption>Stream and Wild Garlic. The idea was to locate a scene of Wild Garlic and new ferns visible from a high path. Unfortunately, my normally excellent sense of direction failed me, and I followed the wrong stream quite a distance before giving up on my quest. I opted for whatever I could find. Unlike other videos on YouTube, I could not find great swathes of Garlic nor a nice path lined with the stuff. What I had was clumpy and overrun with weed. Maybe I was just a little late in my quest. Maybe a week earlier, and the weeds would have been lower. The scene I found was beside the stream, where I instantly knew a slower shutter speed would make the water all nice and blurry and be a great backdrop to the sharp edges of the garlic flower. I am almost happy with the result, though you can see where my dog Duke walked through the scene munching grass and leaves. The lens is a cheap 7Artisans 12mm and it does a good enough job. Some slight blurriness in the top edges I notice, but thats just how our eyes see things. Nikon Zfc, 7Artisans 12mm f2.8 lens set at ISO125, 12mm, 4sec, f16 There is no need for the location. The crashing waves I found great to watch, but preferred the wash-away look after the wave had gone over the rocks. I spent far to much time around this small harbour. I should have explored more, but that’s me, I take my time and take too many pictures in one place. At least I managed a few shots before I got to the harbour and Batería. I had to adjust the camera settings, which meant dropping the camera down to get an exposure setting for the shade. As a result, I am not using the best settings. The shutter should have been faster, and the front of the train would have been crisper than it is. Accessibility. If you use the location info and Google maps, you will see I am at the side of a road. A dead-end road, so there is minimal traffic. No worries though, some of the best images are taken in poor conditions. I have numerous pictures of this boat, I had even been down in the afternoon and taken more. What I wanted was a really moody shot and the half dark with rain clouds over Ben Nevis is exactly what I wanted. A blend of two exposures to ensure the shadow detail of the boat came out and the sky did not burn out. Like my Boats on Mull image, people have commented on the “oil painting” look. i say thank you because thats what I am after. Texture in the images is what I like and that includes cloud. <image:caption>Nordkapp In July I visited Nordkapp / North cape. This view point is called Skarsvågrevva and the red buildings below belong to the Scandic Nordkapp Hotel, with Nordkapp Camping buildings in front. The rainbow is genuine, not some Photoshopped effort. I have a string of images from this period all with the Rainbow in them. It just seemed to hang around for ages. Have i climbed up a hill to get this shot? Have I gone against the idea of Accessible Photography. Well, I would love to say yes, but no. The hardest part was stepping over the Armco barrier at the side of the road to get closer to the edge. The video is in the form of a challenge from a fellow Vlogger from Hong Kong, Keith Reyes the Clueless YouTuber goes out. For the environmentalists out there that may explode at the idea of me jetting off to Norway and the far North just for a photo, well no, let me tell you a secret. I was booked to see a concert in Oslo, then to visit friends in Alta in the far North of Norway. The idea of a collaboration came up and this planned trip was perfect for the “Challenge”. In fact the intro with me in the church yard was actually filmed a full month after I was in Nordkapp. The Scene in Alta where we decide to go to Nordkapp was filmed three days after we went there. Oh, and the Portal didn’t actually appear. lol. What I am saying is the whole episode looks like I keep moving from place to place trying to get to a monument as far North as possible. It wasn’t real, it was all artistic licence. Yes I travelled, but not just for one image. Norkapp, I found is an area and not a single small point at the far North of Europe. We drove into the Norkapp Commune well before the Nordkapp tunnel taking us to the far North. Nordkapp is a municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Honningsvåg, where most residents live. Other settlements in Nordkapp include the villages of Gjesvær, Kåfjord, Kamøyvær, Kjelvik, Nordvågen, Repvåg, Skarsvåg, and Valan.Wikipedia I would say, Nordkapp is an area worthy of photographic expeditions. Just from the road there where stunning views and I can only imagine what was beyond the hills we could see. The keen walking photographers would thoroughly enjoy this part of the world. <image:caption>Alta Rock Art In July I had the pleasure of visiting the Alta Museum and seeing Rock Art created between 6000 and 2000 years ago. Many thanks to Jan Dølør the Director of the Museum for the access to this location. Photography is allowed here, but you must stay on the pathways. I would say, be careful with tripods, that they don’t fall on to the rocks. Never mind damage to the camera or tripod, damage to a World Heritage Site may not go down too well. Yes I used a tripod and set up with my widest lens 14-24mm. I wanted the rock and the moody sky in the shot. Due to the low light caused by the storm clouds rolling over the shutter speed was low, 1/25sec. I wanted as much detail as possible so had the ISO at 64. A higher ISO would have given a faster shutter speed, but being on a tripod there was no need. When men scratched these drawings on to the rock the sea was nipping at their feet. They scratched here, some 4000 years after the ice age ended. Now close to 6000 years later the land has risen up and away from the water line. I tried to show the height, but the wave pattern makes the sea look closer than it is. <image:caption>Woodland Walk I'm getting back out and vlogging at last. I took a wee walk in the woods looking for detail and I found this little scene. Clover and old leaves on top of a rotting fallen tree. Who knew Clover was hairy?? It is quite hard to create a vlog of good images. As soon as I head off with a vlogging camera, it becomes harder to see the really good stuff. A bit like when I go out to photograph birds I see none. So I am happy to get one relatively good shot. The depth of field could have been better. At least I have been able to get out and take pictures though as the past few months have not been very productive. As I said in the video, lots of phone camera shots, but nothing with the big camera. Let’s hope my health continues to improve and I get out more and get some nice shots to share. <image:caption>Hermitage A week after my return from Iceland where I had a nasty wee M.E. episode and I am off in the caravan meeting up with friends at Dunkeld, Perthshire. This was to be my last proper Vlog for many months as my M.E. became too bad for me to do anything over my paid work and walking Duke. This post is being completed in June as I had even neglected the web site. I hope to get out and Vlog soon! This location is the Ossian Hall at the “Hermitage”. It is a viewing platform that captures the roar of the Black Linn water fall with in its specially designed shape. There are doors on it now, but when I first visited in the 70’s it was wide open and as you walked through the entrance you were hit with the almighty roar! It is still loud if the doors are all open, but not like it was, for as you can see there is glass right up the front so less noise gets in. I set up in a precarious position at the top of the falls. I tried various shutter speeds. The faster the shutter the more the water was frozen which was quite cool, but I wanted a bit of blur to show the movement. This one is14mm, f8, 1/20sec, ISO320, I feel f11 would have been better but I was having to raise the ISO to get the speed I wanted. <image:caption>ICELAND This was from day one of what turned out to be a two day trip to Iceland. I do not recommend such a short visit unless you just want to stay in one place. To be fair it was a “City Break”. This was at the furthest point of our day in the car. Yes we visited a couple of waterfalls of course and they appear in the Vlog. We had planned to be pony trekking on the black sand beach, but the weather had been horrendous and the event was cancelled. This view was planned in advance. In fact I had climbed a mound behind this location to get a higher view. This though showed too much of the town of Vik, which to me fair is not exactly pretty. I came down trying different perspectives and ended up with this one from the car park. The peaks are called Reynisdrangar. The reason is simple, talking to camera amongst people is embarrassing and I have avoided it up to now. I took a couple of main images and a couple of other images while on Calton Hill over looking Edinburgh. I will show the others in the “My General Work” gallery as I quite like them. It was as expected not easy for me to talk to camera but I did so, if a little subdued. Interaction with others does show I do have some life in me ;-). Probably due to the fairly long drive down a dead end road! The view can be seen from a monument at the top of a path from the carpark. The problem there though is a lot of the water disappears behind a mound. A muddy trail will take you to this location. Here I stood for around an hour just waiting for the right light. I would need to be standing with the Cormorants on that rock in the middle of the frame. Accessibility for Bow Fiddle Rock views. There is no carpark. Street parking is available. The path down is just a worn track in the dirt. A sheep track type of path. The best of the tracks are up high. Careful if you head off closer to the edge. Those tracks are less used, a bit rough and can be steep or involve big steps to get up or down. Needless to say the closer to the edge the more care you should take. The track to this point where the image is taken from is up a mound on ground that is eroding away with use. The track is very close to a cliff edge. I moved further to my left and had to go into a hollow and climb back out the other side. No way was I walking the rim, it was far too close to the cliff edge. If you go in windy conditions be particularly careful. Predominant wind will be pushing you to the edge at this point. <image:caption>The Jacobite Steam Train A shot at an iconic steam engine, The Jacobite or Hogwarts Express. Officially this is The Jacobite Train, but for obvious reasons the owners have also dubbed it the Hogwarts Express and sell tickets to that market. By the way both trains were built in 1937. I have walked a short distance from the car to this location. There is ample parking at Neptune’s Staircase which is close by. I would suggest using the Banavie Locks Car Park which has a path heading towards this location. Around 120m only. I love the combination of the old white house on one side and the signal box or bridge control tower and Ben Nevis on the other side of a fabulous old steam train. Using this location I have been able to balance the image with Ben Nevis on one side and a large tree on the other. Without that tree it would not look as good. The balance of the control tower and the house also works well. Feel free to cross the line and get the view from the other side. Especially if the sun is out as the train will be better lit. <image:caption>Iris flowers and Mountain No, it’s not a ground breaking image, but the scene is nice. Well I think so. This was a very accessible image. With a place to park really close, and setting up at the edge of the road, you really can’t get much simpler. That is the whole idea of this web site and the YouTube channel. Easy to access images. Yes, a nice sunset would make it better. Maybe next time. But to be fair, getting a glorious day in Scotland is quite rare, so look at it as a unique capture. :-) Location: 56°46'12.3"N 5°02'29.9"W. 56.770076, -5.041644 What3words ///claim.riders.licks</image:caption>

<image:caption>Glen Nevis From a distinctive mound or knoll, at the side of the C1162 Glen Nevis Road, we get a spectacular view up the Glen. Although not mentioned in the video, we are looking up at the mountains Sgurr á Mhàim, Stob Choire á Mhail and Stob Bàn. The biggest of all, Ben Nevis, is to the side, so close its summit cannot be seen. I just had to get a sunny view of this location and ventured out early enough to avoid incoming cloud, but late enough for the light to flood down the steep mountain slopes. (To see that image, check out the West Coast Gallery). I then returned two days later to get this shot. Again, early, but this time before the cloud hanging off the steep hill sides would burn off. The rain had just stopped and the air was warming, which causes the forests to steam and add to the hanging cloud. Unfortunately these moist windless conditions are perfect for the Midges and clouds of those descended upon me. Not for many years have I experienced Midges as bad as this and never have I filmed a swarm so clearly. The location behind this view point was used in Braveheart for the village scenes, but we also see other areas in this image were other scenes were filmed. Other notable movies have been filmed in this Glen such as Harry Potter, Outlander, & Highlander. Accessibility. The view is obtainable from the car, using the carpark at the location marked on Google maps as The Braveheart Film Village. If you are up to it, you can climb this Mound for a better view. There is a path and steps, but the steps are huge, so be aware. Location: 56°47'18.6"N 5°03'23.7"W. 56.788487, -5.056594 What3Words. ///piglets.lyricism.equivocal</image:caption>

<image:caption>Castle Stalker I spent a long time waiting for the sun to reappear having gone in moments after I arrived at the Castle Stalker View. Up at the view point which is part of a Cafe and Shop, you look down on the castle and have a view out down the coast as well. After an hour and a half I gave up waiting on the sun and found my way down on to the beach for this classic shot. It is not the easiest place to get to by car as parking is restricted. Probably due to the number of people wanting to get this view. I was lucky and got in to the Old Inn car park just before the owner closed it off. If you do get parked or can cycle in along the cycle track then this is a great view point. However, be aware the lines will be submerged when the tide comes in. If you watch the Video linked in my video then you will see Kieran Husbands in the very situation. I was lucky. I had not planned this, it was pure luck. I also managed to get some amazing cloud to add drama to the scene and just enough sunlight coming through to make the castle pop. Had it been direct full sun then the shadows would have been far darker. I don’t know about you, but I like the soft sun light and soft shadows. The image is three images blended. Three focus points, the immediate foreground, the waters edge and the castle. This ensures the while scene is in focus and not soft which would happen with a high f stop number like f22 Wikipedia :- Castle Stalker (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal an Stalcaire) is a four-storey tower house or keep. <image:caption>Isle of Mull - Old Beached fishing boats, Salen Bay These are the famous wrecked fishing boats beached on the shore at Salen Bay, Isle of Mull. This location is on the east coast of Mull, approximately halfway between Craignure where the Ferry comes in and Tobermory, which was my first planned destination. The full name is 'Sàilean Dubh Chaluim Chille' (the black little bay of St Columba). I had not planned on seeing these boats, but as they are right beside the road I could not resist. The fact they are so close to a road would explain why a search on line will bring up hundreds of images of them. There is a small area just off the road that will accommodate two maybe three cars. Just be careful not to drop wheels off the edge. I had to assist another photographer as she could not get her car back up over the edge. A combination of not being a good driver, her words, and a very low powered hire car. Access to the boats is good and the beach not too uneven. A simple picture from where you park may well be the best image available. As you will see from the video I tried several compositions and preferred the view shown here, from in front of my car. It is peaceful and the scenery delightful. Get the passenger only ferry, which is located south of Oban. You then have a choice of going straight to the castle. or taking a Loop on the West side and back on the East. You can also head to the North of the Island if you so wish. <image:caption>Black house ruins - North Uist The wind was blowing hard and rain was threatening again. In the distance you can see it blowing through. The light catching it and giving a glow to the scene to the right. I wanted to show this old house in its true environment. The exposed open aspect, with wind and rain. The bleak yet stunning landscape. The darkness of the day caused by heavy cloud. We can only imagine what it was like for the islanders to live in these Black Houses. Large families together along with livestock. The lens I had was not wide enough to get everything into the frame. I could easily go back to the car which is literally just out of shot to the left and fetch my wide angle lens. But, as I explain in the vlog, where this features, a wide angle lens would distort the building and the chimney could bend out of shape a little. The remedy was to set up the camera on a tripod in a vertical/portrait orientation. Then take multiple overlapping pictures from left to right. At home I was able to "stitch" these together in Lightroom to create one very large image. An image that would show everything I wanted without distortion. Feel free to click on the image to be taken to the Vlog. Access - Close to road, but did require climbing over a gate. It must be noted that these old building do still belong to residents. Houses near by will be where they had a modern house built and moved to. As such I never enter the building and act as responsibly and respectfully as possible. We had to walk a fair distance for this one. I actually was not sure I would do it, but I have more ability at times than I give myself credit for. I just have to watch that I don't push too hard and be bed ridden for a few days afterwards. That's what M.E. can do to you. Despite the wind and even some rain it was a nice walk. It is two images blended. This is a technique used a lot by photographers, but generally they won't tell you. To get good focus in the foreground and on the distance is not always easy. So two images with two different focus points are taken and merged later. A tripod is best used for this, but it can be done by hand if very careful. In the video I show this image then switch video footage of the scene to show the conditions. The wind was howling, the grass was being thrown about and Duke's ears were flapping in the wind. <image:caption>Berneray Youth Hostel. For the series of vlogs I did from The Hebrides, this was my accommodation. It gave great insight to living in a black house. With a wood burner at one end giving a cozy feel and a mild wiff of wood smoke you could start to imagine how it must have been. Then the Hebrides was hit by a former US Hurricane. Due to that being forecast the place filled to capacity, which is highly unusual. The end of Accessible Hebrides Part 2 shows the Hurricane hitting. Inside the old Black House though, it was warm, the wind noise was minimal, and the chat, the laughter and the whisky kept us going well into the night. This from the Hosteling Scotland website - "This unique hostel, operated by the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust, is a traditional thatched croft on the beach overlooking the sound of Harris. A walk up Beinn Shleibhe and Borve Hill offer superb and contrasting views of the many surrounding islands as well as of Berneray itself." Click the picture to go to the Hostel's own web site. For most of those using the Berneray Youth Hostel, a walk to the West Beach and round the top of the island and back to the Hostel is a nice morning or afternoon walk. For the likes of me I drive as close as possible and walk the rest of the way to the beach. It was a lovely, but windy, day and I did take quite a few images, but this one I really liked. This is a compromise and it worked. Access - From the road side. Parked just off the road and walked across it to get the shot. Nikon D750. <image:caption>Fairy pools - Skye Actually it is a small water fall up stream from the Fairy Pools. The pools are nice but getting a good picture is not easy. Here though, I can place the tripod in the water, low down to get the stream flowing past and keep the peak of the mountain in the frame. Access- This is a 1km, 3400ft walk in from the carpark entrance. The path is good to rough. There are large stepping stones to cross a stream. I saw one couple fail to get to the Fairy pools as one of the pair could not manage the stepping stones. Actually more like hopping, jumping stones, than stepping. I was having a good day and felt capable of making this walk. I had to be careful not to over do it or the rest of my trip could have been ruined. Determination can get you places. Nikon D750. <image:caption>Old man of Storr - Skye Every photographer on YouTube that comes to Skye will hike up to the Old man of Storr view point in the dark to get sun rise. Me; gets up late; drives to the base; puts on the big lens; gets a shot. No I am not keen to hike up and I knew it was going to be low cloud so no decent sun rise. This was taken with my 150-600mm lens and I only actually needed it at 150mm. In the video you can see the Storr is quite far away. To use more power on the lens I could have cropped right in, but that would have taken away the setting and the weather. The atmosphere would have been lost and I think it looks good with it. Access - taken from a parking area alongside the road. It is for people about to walk up. Google street view shows a forest here but it had just been felled when I got there. <image:caption>Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS over Stirling Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3) high above Stirling and the Campsie Hills. With cloud dominating the weather for several days, I had only one opportunity to try to capture the comet, on October 14th, which had been predicted as the best viewing night. I drove to a nearby vantage point just ten minutes from home with my neighbour and his two teenage sons. At first there was no sign of the comet at all, and several test shots along the horizon showed nothing. By chance I finally caught it right at the top of one frame, much higher in the sky than I had expected. After resetting the tripod I was able to record a few images before high cloud moved in and quickly obscured both the comet and its tail. I had hoped to frame it above Stirling Castle, just out of view to the right, but the opportunity disappeared within minutes. As a small bonus, the three who came with me were each able to take a photograph using my camera. I later printed their images with their names credited on them. Land detail has been lifted slightly in Lightroom, as the foreground was almost completely dark at the time. The additional streaks in the sky are of unknown origin, possibly aircraft, satellites or meteors. Nikon D850 150mm — Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 3s — ISO 1000 October 2024</image:caption>

<image:caption>Aurora at Shieldbank Aurora seen from Shieldbank Vaulting Centre during the second major display of the year on 10th October. Several members of my local photography club had gathered at our usual meeting place after reports of strong activity. At first we could only see a faint red glow behind the trees, but after moving slightly to one side the full display suddenly came into view. The brightness of the red aurora was unlike anything I had seen before, and far stronger than it appears in the photograph. In fact, the colour in the final image has been toned down slightly, as the original was so intense it almost looked unreal. It was one of those rare nights when the sky seemed to change every few seconds, and everyone present knew we were witnessing something special. This location gives a clear 360-degree view of the sky, and with the car parked only a short distance away it was an ideal place to watch the display. <image:caption>Aurora and car This was taken on the 10th of October. The 2nd “big” aurora this year. The best was to the East, this is later and looking North West. I’d just started the capture when a car appeared over the crest and drove through the scene. I thought it had ruined the image, but I quite like the result. This and others taken at Shieldbank Vaulting Centre, and is where my local photo club meets up. The car was parked just a short distance behind me, and from here, I had a 360-degree view of a fabulous aurora. Nikon D850 f6.3 15mm. (Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8) 20s ISO 800 October 2014</image:caption>

<image:caption>Forth Road Bridge and Forth Bridge The Forth Road Bridge with the Forth Rail Bridge beyond, photographed during one of two consecutive evenings of perfectly calm water at slack tide. This image was taken from the breakwater at Port Edgar Marina, a location that at the time gave an excellent viewpoint across the Forth. Unfortunately access to the exact spot is now restricted by fencing, although a similar composition can still be found nearby. Conditions were ideal, with almost no wind and very little movement in the water, allowing the reflections to remain clear during the exposure. Nights like this are quite rare, which made the effort of returning on consecutive evenings worthwhile. Photographed using my Nikon D7000, which I was using at the time, with a wide-angle lens to include both bridges in the frame. Nikon D7000 18mm — ISO 100 — f8 March 2014</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wild Garlic – Torryburn, Fife Wild garlic in woodland near Torryburn, Fife. I discovered this location thanks to the help of the photography community online after searching for a suitable patch of wild garlic closer to home without success. After seeing an image posted in a Facebook group, I was able to identify the area and visit the spot myself. The scene was exactly what I had hoped for, with the flowers stretching much further across the woodland floor than I first expected, making it perfect for a wide composition. Because of my ongoing difficulties with focusing accuracy, this photograph was created using focus stacking. Each section of the scene was captured several times with different focus points, and then combined to give sharpness from front to back. In total this image is made from 28 photographs, blended first as stacked images and then merged into a panorama. The walk to the location was short, and I was never far from the car, which made the extra work manageable. <image:caption>Windy Path through Wild Garlic A winding path through a carpet of wild garlic near Torryburn in Fife. This was one of those moments where the best view appeared when I turned around to look back the way I had come, something I always try to remember when walking with the camera. I discovered this location with the help of the online photography community after struggling to find a good wild garlic woodland locally. After seeing an image posted in a Facebook group, I asked a few questions and was soon able to visit the spot myself. The area produced several images I am very pleased with, and the short walk from the car made it an easy place to work slowly and try different compositions. This photograph was focus stacked to keep the detail sharp from front to back. I am still working on getting the clarity I would like from this image and the previous one, but the scene itself made the effort worthwhile. <image:caption>Wild Garlic Tree A lone tree standing among a wide spread of wild garlic near Torryburn, Fife. Despite the name, it is not a wild garlic tree of course, just a tree surrounded by one of the best displays of garlic flowers I have managed to find locally. I located this spot with the help of photographers online after searching unsuccessfully for some time. When I saw an image from this woodland posted in a Facebook group, I knew it was worth the trip, and it turned out to be exactly the sort of scene I had been hoping for. Several photographs from this visit worked well, and the location was easy to reach, with the car never more than a short walk away. That made it possible to take my time and try different viewpoints without rushing. Nikon D850 29mm — Nikkor 24–70mm f2.8 f7.1 — 1/20s — ISO 400 May 2024</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sun Setting in the Arms of the Trees Sunset behind the Ochil Hills, framed by two trees near our photography club meeting place. This was taken on the way back from a club outing to Dollar, when several of us stopped to watch the sun dropping behind the hills. Our club venue has a clear view to the north and west, and on this evening the light lined up perfectly with the trees. I first photographed the full scene, but preferred this tighter composition, which gives a more intimate feel and makes better use of the natural framing. Moments like this never last long, so the shot had to be taken quickly before the sun disappeared completely. <image:caption>Cherry Blossom Washing Away Fallen cherry blossom caught in the flowing water beside Dollar Burn. This was taken during a photography club visit a few days after my earlier trip to the same location, just as the blossom was starting to fall heavily and would soon be gone. We had been photographing along the bank for a while when I noticed the petals collecting around a small rock in the stream. The light was fading quickly and I had no tripod with me, so I had to rely on the camera’s stabilisation while using a long lens. The exposure was much slower than normally recommended for this focal length, but modern image stabilisation made it possible to keep the rock and petals sharp while allowing the water to blur slightly around them. The focus was placed on the front rock, which leaves the one behind just softly out of focus. Nikon Z fc 195mm — Nikkor DX 50–250mm f4.5–6.3 f10 — 1/15s — ISO 250 May 2024</image:caption>

I had hoped for dramatic waves breaking against the harbour wall, but the pier itself was well sheltered and the water inside remained relatively calm. Although this was not my favourite image from the session, several fellow photographers preferred this composition, so it earned its place in the gallery. Converting to black and white helped simplify the scene and emphasise the shape of the pier against the water. Sometimes the quieter images turn out to be the ones people notice most. <image:caption>Tree line The plan was to do some woodland photography, but my ageing dog, Duke, decided he wasn’t going to walk, so I headed home. Just a very short distance away, I saw this treeline to the side of the road. As the camera was out and ready, I stepped out of the car and took a few images. This one I decided to convert to Black and White as it just added a touch of drama to the scene. Nikon Zfc f9 32.5mm 1/640s ISO 100 February 2024</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lambs Taken a few years ago. A group of young sheep or older lambs, depending on your viewpoint. The RAW file has them very dark against the sky, but with very little work in post an acceptable image appears. Taken from the side of the road to Denny from Fintry in the Carron Glen. <image:caption>Scrooge A studio shot with my camera club. Single light source (flash) to the left of the image. In hindsight maybe the candle should have been on the other side. BUT that may have cast a shadow which would have looked odd. Edited in Lightroom where I opted for the more orange glow rather than a more white light. Nikon Zfc. f8, 1/125sec, ISO 100, ARTLAB / Nonikkor 35mm f1.4 lens set to f16 where others had theirs at f5.6. To me, it shows how that lens gobbles light! December 2023</image:caption>

<image:caption>Woodland Fungi Back in my favourite woods, I found this lovely bunch of mushrooms. No tripod, APS-C camera and low light. No worries, just rest the camera on a log, use a shutter delay and hold it carefully. The great thing about the Zfc is the articulated screen. No need to get too low myself to get the shot. I have reduced clarity and Texture very slightly in a bid to get a “magical” feel. Not sure it worked. I am not keen on taking those settings right down. <image:caption>Man in Workshop, Portrait - Competition entry A double image! The speed was too slow to capture a sharp image of the subject and also get the movement of the arm. I took two shots, one with Vic standing still and the second bringing the hammer down. I blended in the moving arm to create one image. Both images are at the same settings as below. The Workshop is dimly lit with old fluorescent lights. We added a studio light but this was not enough to be able to bring the ISO down or the shutter speed up. <image:caption>Las Americas - Tenerife It had been a bad day for me. ME/Long Covid was still bringing me down, and I’d spent all day in the Hotel. At sunset, I walked across the road to the beach and took some pictures with my new, more portable camera, the Nikon Zfc. I had taken a few of this family walking towards me, but this shot, my last image, was the best. Yes, I could have had them closer to the camera, but I try hard to avoid taking pictures of children. I even showed this to the parents to be sure they were happy with it, which they were. The f-stop seems wrong. F11 may have been a better choice for focus throughout. The camera focus peaking assured me it was getting everything in focus, so I trusted it and carried on. A smaller f stop (f8 to f11) would have meant a higher ISO and possible graininess or a slower shutter with the risk of motion blur. I am happy that the camera managed what it did with those settings. I also had grad grey filters on the camera to stop the sky from blowing out. Nikon Zfc. f4.5 1/500sec 200ISO 16mm</image:caption>

<image:caption>Glen Coe I took this while on a walk to the Ralston Monument. The views are spectacular. I stopped here to get one of my favourite shots of all time. I could not have placed these two walkers in a better position if I had tried! I could not believe my luck that one would point towards the three sisters just as I wanted to take the image. In my opinion, the composition is perfect. So many lines lead directly to these walkers, and the outstretched arm takes your eye back to the Three sisters. The hills on either side balance each other off, right down the valley. Their slopes led us to the walkers again and again. The only thing that would have made the image perfect would have been a shaft of sunlight on the pair and a shadowed area behind. Nikon D850. f11 1/125sec 100ISO 24mm</image:caption>

<image:caption>Glen Coe This is an 8-shot pano. Relatively large file size that I had to reduce by 75%. As a result, even here, it is a little soft compared to how I see it on my screen before uploading. I took a walk to the Ralston Monument. A place I had wanted to visit for a very long time. The view is spectacular. I walked up to the outcrop above the monument and took this image. Nikon D850. f7.1 1/400sec 100ISO 24mm x 8 images blended in Lightroom.</image:caption>
